My New WPF blog and site

2007 is going to the year of WPF for me.   I’ve got a lot of projects pending, I’ll tell you more about them as I get the details worked out.   But  I can tell you this….
I started a new blog at wpfwonderland.wordpress.com that’s dedicated to WPF topics.  I’ll have a companion website up and running [...]

Hooray! Microsoft released the service packs for Visual Studio today.  These are a MUST INSTALL for anyone using VS.  There are plenty of bug fixes.  The two that I’m most excited about are the Visual Basic background compiler fix and the performance fix for compiling large projects.  Both of these issues have slowed my daily [...]

Would you like a free copy of Windows Vista?  You have to spend a few hours looking at some webcasts and fill out some information.  Doesn’t seem like much work for $300 worth of software.
Wait, there’s more.  A free copy of Office 2007 Pro ($500) if you watch some marketing videos for Office.  So far [...]

I installed Office 2007 a couple weeks ago.  Sorry, I’m not going to call it by its new name (2007 Office System).  That name seems backwards to me.
If you are using Office 2007 you’ve undoubtedly said “where did they put that?’ a time or two. Tech-Net has a nice overview of all the changes you’ll need to learn.

The .NET 2.0 framework will be released in about a week.  That’s the official release date anyway.   If you are an MSDN subscribers you can download the new bits already.
You can also get the 2.0 runtime now.  I found a webpage that lists all the runtime and redistributable you’ll ever need.  Bookmarked!

”Yeah, right,” Junko replied, “that’s a bit grandiose don’t you think?”
“You’re right. Crazy idea.”   I mumbled,  “I wish I could go to every ‘technical’ conference.“
Junko rolled his eyes. “How you going to afford that?  You can’t convince every software conference to hire you [...]

I’m watching the Prashant Sridharan (Microsoft) keynote here at VSLive.  He is demonstrating all the new features of Visual Studio Team System (VSTS).  He just mentioned a feature planned for Version 2 of VSTS that caught my attention and I think is going to be very useful.
Currently the VSTS Testing Version includes a huge [...]

Ethics of Decompiling Code

Is there ever an ethical reason to decompile another developers code?
The program-transform site has a lot of information about programming, especially reverse-engineering and compilation/recompilation. Since they seem to promote techniques for decompiling code I wasn’t surprised to find a decompile ethics page.
Ethical dilemma
Well, that got me to thinking.  What are the circumstances, if any, that  would [...]

Just about every article you read about deploying .NET application mentions the .NET runtime.  Remember this is approximately 20 MB in size
I’ve heard it  called

Large
Huge
Cumbersome
Bloated
Considerable
Hefty
Sizable
Substantial

Then the articles usually bemoan the fact that the huge download size will keep consumers from downloading it. Does is seem to anyone else that .NET gets more complaints on this [...]

Steve McConnell

I was getting on the plane in Seattle.  I was the last person in line (don’t ask - Alaska Airlines has a new loading policy).  At least I thought I was last but when I turned around I ran into Steve McConnell.  Steve is giving one of the keynotes at SdExpo this week.
You may know [...]
